Go Twins!

October 2nd, 2006 · No Comments · General Blather

On Sunday, I sat watching the Minnesota Twins play their final regular season game of the season. The Twins had gone through a bit of a end-of-season letdown by losing the previous two games to the White Sox. By some strange cosmic curse, the Detroit Tigers has lost their previous two games to the Royals and were tied with the Twins for first place in the AL Central. Had both the Twins and the Tigers lost (or both won), the Tigers would’ve won the AL Central, due to the Tigers having won the season series. The only chance the Twins had of winning the AL Central themselves was to beat the White Sox and hope that the best team in baseball all season would be swept by a team that had only won 61 games.

Also on the line was the AL batting title, which had been led by Joe Mauer for the last 4 months of the season. No other catcher in history had ever won the AL batting title, and Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano were doing their best to make sure it didn’t happen this year, either.

The 45,000 in attendance got to see their team’s catcher win the batting title and got to see (via the stadium scoreboard) the Royals come back from a 6-0 deficit to tie the game and send it into extra innings. The Twins eventually beat the White Sox, and the team, along with 35,000 fans who hadn’t left the stadium, remained to watch the end of the Royals/Tigers game on the giant screens in the Metrodome. The Royals ended up beating Detroit 10-8 in the 12th, after which the team got to celebrate with a very energetic crowd.

I don’t usually get geeked-up about sports, but I do like watching my teams when they’re winning. I’m really glad I got to watch everything unfold yesterday so at the very least I could say I was (in some very small way) part of it.
